ŽEMAIČIŲ
PRIETELIUS (The
Samogitian Friend), Roman Catholic weekly published in 1925-1940.
Started by the Christian Democrats in Kaunas in 1925, the following
year it was taken over by the newly established diocese of Telsiai,
becoming its organ. During 1926-1927 it was printed in Šiauliai and
from 1928, by the diocesan press in Telsiai. Circulation reached
5,000. Its editors were both priests and laymen. The paper primarily
published news of the diocese and of Catholic organizations, but it
was not exclusively religious; it covered political, economic, and
civic affairs, and provided space for the literary efforts of local
writers. The paper was closed and its press confiscated by the Soviet
occupying authorities in 1940.
