- ŽINYČIA (The Treasury of
Knowledge), a cultural journal published at Tilžė (Tilsit), East
Prussia, from 1900-03, at a time when printing in Latin characters was
banned in Lithuania by the Russian government. The journal was founded
and published by the same persons, mostly Catholic priests, who
produced the monthly Tėvynės Sargas (q.v.; Guardian of the
Homeland). Both publications were edited by Rev. Juozas
Tumas-Vaižgantas. All together five issues were brought out, the last
two edited by Rev. Antanas Milukas. Residing in the United States, the
latter published another journal, Dirva (The Field), with which
Žinyčia was merged in 1903. Carrying articles on Lithuanian
language, history and folklore as well as literary works, Žinyčia
numbered among its contributors such notable personalities as Jonas
Mačiulis-Maironis, Vincas Pietaris, Marija Pečkauskaitė, Antanas
Alekna, Jonas Basanavičius, and Adomas Jakštas-Dambrauskas.
